Room 4 of 10
The trunk that does not care about the story
Energy is conserved. A bit, when erased, costs heat. Once you understand Kardashev Scale, essentially all energy generation will be solar.
There’s no such thing as an escape altitude. There’s only an escape velocity.
Y Combinator, 15 September 2016. Technology does not get better by itself. Ancient Egypt built the pyramids, then forgot how to build them, and forgot how to read hieroglyphics. Rome built roadways, aqueducts, indoor plumbing, then forgot. Stages can reverse. Entropy is not on your side.

All-In, 31 October 2025. Kardashev Scale 1, a planet. Scale 2, a star. Scale 3, a galaxy. We are a few percent of Type I, optimistically. At Type II, everything is solar power and the rest is noise. The Sun produces well over a billion times more energy than everything on Earth combined.
Hangs on Energy
26 September 2024: a relatively small corner of Texas or New Mexico can serve all US electricity. 12 May 2025: solar aka fusion aka starlight, then a billionfold at Kardashev II, then the galaxy. 22 March 2026: any self-respecting civilization needs to reach at least Kardashev II.
Information is physical. Landauer’s fact is the bridge from physics to computers. Wheeler’s it from bit is the bolder, less settled neighbor.
STARLIGHT prints 42 on full reduction. Found after. The Kardashev sentences do not need it.
- PhysicsThe world has conservation laws. Energy, momentum, charge. A simulation, if it exists, still has to render this.
- Information is physicalA bit is not a ghost. Erasing it costs energy. Wheeler asked whether “it” comes from “bit.”
- EnergyCivilizations are energy-conversion engines. Kardashev is a tech tree with the leaves stripped off.
