Sid Meier’s Civilization, first published in 1991, locks Literature behind Writing. The Great Library behind Literature. On 6 August 2023 he called that insight into the stepping stones of actual civilizational growth.
The book he names is Will and Ariel Durant’s Story of Civilization. Progress is path-dependent. Civilizations, plural.

Player, avatar, developer. Those roles stay questions until someone finds the menu.
