Multiplanetary
The next civic tech, if the tree is real: life on more than one world. Backup, not a metaphor.
This hangs on Stages of civilization, Physics.
See on the treeIf civilizations are path-dependent energy engines, then a single-planet engine has a single-point failure. Making life multiplanetary is, in Elon’s public framing, the unlock that keeps the game from ending when this board does.
13 August 2026, asked his motivation: the mission is advancement of civilization and propagation of consciousness to the stars. 25 July 2026: any civilization that loses faith in the future will die. Exploring the stars is an exciting future that you can believe in.
On Moonshots in January 2026 he named the preferred win on the other board: tech victory to Alpha Centauri. Get off the planet. Do not start down the culture or relations path. Do not obliterate the other tribes. The nearest other sun is the destination, not the domination screen.
Kardashev II hangs here as well as on Energy. A star-scale civilization is already multiplanetary in all but name. The physics branch is the prereq.
The mission is advancement of civilization and propagation of consciousness to the stars.
Any civilization that loses faith in the future will die. Exploring the stars is an exciting future that you can believe in.
The only way I ever win is getting off the planet. Tech victory to Alpha Centauri. I never even start going down the culture or relations path. I just get off the planet as fast as I can. Aiming for the Alpha Centauri tech victory. It just seems like the right way to win. Rather than obliterate the other tribes.
